1967 Attack on the USS Liberty On June 8, 1967, during the six day war, Israel attempted to sink the USS Liberty in international waters off the coast of Egypt. Although the Naval Board of Inquiry acknowledged that Israel attacked the U.S.S Liberty on June 8, 1967, it rejected the claim that Israeli forces had misidentified the ship as Egyptian. The attackers first knocked out the ship’s communications, and then strafed fire bombed and torpedoed it. 34 were killed and 170 injured.

Many details of the attack remain classified by the U.S. government. Had the attack been successful in sinking the Liberty, no one would have suspected Israel.

Although LBJ accepted the Israeli claim that the three hour attack was a "Tragic accident", surviving crew members and many high-level officials never accepted this explanation and believed that Israel intentionally attacked the US ship.

Secretary of Defense Clark Clifford served as the chairman of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board during the 1967 Six- Day War. In this capacity, he oversaw the official investigation of the 1967 USS Liberty incident. As a staunch supporter of Israel, he was perplexed by the Israeli government’s explanation following the attack: “We were baffled. From the beginning there was skepticism and disbelief about the Israeli version of events. We had enormous respect for Israeli intelligence and it was difficult to believe the Liberty had been attacked by mistake." As Secretary of State under Johnson, Rusk drew the ire of supporters of Israel after he let it be known that he believed the USS Liberty incident was a deliberate attack on the ship, rather than an accident. He was very outspoken about his views on the attack: “Accordingly, there is every reason to believe that the USS Liberty was or should have been identified, or at least her nationality determined, prior to the attack. In these circumstances, the later military attack by Israeli aircraft on the USS Liberty is quite literally incomprehensible".

The subsequent attack by Israeli torpedo boats, substantially after the vessel was or should have been identified by Israeli military forces, manifests the same reckless disregard for human life. In 1990 he wrote, “I was never satisfied with the Israeli explanation. Their sustained attack to disable and sink Liberty precluded an assault by accident or by some trigger-happy local commander. Through diplomatic channels we refused to accept their explanations. I didn't believe them then, and I don't believe them to this day. The attack was outrageous."
